A question for you all

I am noticing more and more that Alvin has a lot of processing issues, many that I have written about here.  I don't know if they are getting worse, or if I am just noticing them more, as I continue to get to know him.  I suspect it's the later.

One thing I have noticed and been alarmed by, is that when I am getting something out of the oven, Alvin tries repeatedly to approach the open oven and we have had a few close calls.  Luckily, I rarely use the oven.  He is not repelled or hesitant when feeling heat.  I have never encountered this with another dog and I am wondering if this is a common behavior in dogs, or if your dogs have felt the heat and known to keep a distance?  I am trying to ascertain whether this is another processing problem for him or if it's just what dogs do.  Please leave me a comment if you have had any experience with this issue.

Thank you!

  1. i don't know about other dogs, but my current two, emma & lucy (and my girl at the bridge, liberty) do approach the open oven door w/o a care or any discernable reaction to the heat coming forth!

as i am extremely paranoid about them being burned or injured by a hot flying pan, and as i do use the oven frequently....i have trained myself to shoo them out of the kitchen before i open the oven. and i pretty much continue to yell at them while the oven door is open. i also do not take the dish out of the oven to check it (just pop the door, check, close the door) so there are less chances of a flying hot dish.

and...when you do open the oven door, unless you are right at the door, the heat is not very intense. i'm thinking if i can't feel it a few feet away, neither can they.

worst case scenario, block off the kitchen when needed.

  2. I finally figured out how to respond directly to comments.

Thank you, Margaret for your comment. It is helpful to learn that it is a normal reaction of dogs. I guess it's similar to a young child often not knowing to keep their hands off the stove until they get burned. I, like you, would be horrified if Alvin got burned and it could so easily ocur. The obvious sometimes escapes me and when you mentioned blocking off the kitchen, it dawned on me that I can do just that with a doggy gate I have. Luckily, it's once in a blue moon that the oven is used but I will definitely block off the kitchen before using it.

    Thanks again!
